The Yarn and The Spinner

About Island Yarns

These yarns are spun and dyed at my studio off the Maine Coast. The yarns are soft spun - thick and thin producing a yarn that gives interesting texture and drape to the finished garment. The yarns are best suited for use on needles size 6 and up - the larger the needle the more drape the finished product will have.  If a denser fabric is desired use a smaller needle. Since the yarns are soft spun they are not suited to socks but make wonderful scarves, hats, mittens and sweaters.  When using this or any yarn it is best to do a test swatch to check your gage.

Please remember that the yarn is custom spun in small batches. Please buy enough for the project as the dye lots will never be exactly the same. The yarns are available at Island Artisans in Bar Harbor or from the artist---contact her via email to find out the current selection.

The Spinner

From her studio on Little Cranberry Island, overlooking the Great Harbor of Mount Desert and the mountains beyond, Sue Hill spins wool, silk, mohair and other fibers into yarns. Her dye-bath colors are inspired by the ever changing color pallet of her island surroundings.

Sue has been a knitter since childhood and a spinner and dyer for the last 25 years. She is a member of the Wednesday Spinners and has attended many fiber workshops.
